Owatonna softball has been a force to be reckoned with in 2022-23 and the Huskies showed more of their strengths last week with two major section wins over Rochester Mayo and Rochester Century.

The Huskies took down Rochester Mayo first by a mercy-rule scoreline of 10-0 before edging out a quality 7-6 win over Rochester Century just two days later.

“Players from both teams really battled tonight and it was good for us to find a way to come out with a win over a Rochester Century team that is really playing well right now. Zoie Roush and Sami Bogen both came up with some big hits tonight. We had to overcome some errors that we usually don’t have in the field, but in the end, we found a way to get the job done tonight. That is what this team has been doing all season and it was good to see them step up again,” said Owatonna head coach Jeremy Moran.

Owatonna was able to jump out to a 1-0 lead over Rochester Century through two innings, but both sides would remain quiet for the most part until the fifth inning.

In the fifth, the Panthers found some run support by scoring twice to lead 2-1.

Owatonna answered with a five-run bottom of the inning, but the Panthers answered once again with four runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 6-6.

Neither side was able to pull ahead in the seventh, extending the game into extra innings..

The scoreboard remained gridlocked at 6-6 until the bottom of the ninth inning when first baseman Samantha Bogen stepped up to the plate with runners on second and third with one out.

After falling behind 0-2 in the count, Bogen poked two pitches down the right field line foul before finally connecting and sending a shot to the right fielder.

Izzy Radel stood on third waiting to tag after the catch, however, the Panthers’ right fielder dropped the ball and allowed Radel an easy jog to home plate to end the game 7-6 in favor of Owatonna.

Zoie Roush led the Huskies with two hits, two runs and three RBIs while pitcher Kennedy Hodgman earned the win allowing six runs in nine full innings with five strikeouts.

Owatonna went on to play Lakeville North in the Section 1AAAA championship game on Tuesday, May 30, however, stats and results were not available at the time of press.
