Byron wrestling gets first victory with win over Bombers

While it was the Byron wrestling team’s first meet of the season, it didn’t look like it as the Bears stormed back from an early deficit to defeat Cannon Falls 43-27 on Thursday, Dec. 5.

Head Coach Ryan Radke said his team was able to get the win because the Bears played up to their potential.

“All we do is ask kids to step on the mat and perform to the best of their abilities and that's what they did,” he said.

He noted that one reason the Bears performed to the best of the abilities was because of their fitness.

“I felt overall we were in good shape to start the season. We won some matches based on being in good physical shape,” he said.

Other reasons Radke believes the Bears wrestled well are because they had a large crowd supporting them and a good team effort.

“It was a great meet. We had a great crowd, recognized staff for our staff appreciation night, and wrestled well as a team,” he said.

He mentioned that the Bears wrestled well because individual wrestlers escalated their game when their team needed it.

“We had some matches that could have gone either way and our kids stepped up and wrestled very well,” he said.

Even though they played well, Radke sees room for improvement.

“We have to just work on getting a little better every single day, quit making any basic mistakes, and stay healthy,” he said.
