Westfield goes 1-2 at quad meet in Maple River

The Westfield Razorback’s up-and-down season continued as they lost to Maple River 27-39 and Tri-City United 29-34 but beat St. Claire-Mankato Loyola (SC-ML) 48-24 on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Against Maple River, Westfield’s Bo Zweiner and Lane Lembke both won by fall at 113 and 120 pounds, respectively.

Bradley Simon won by a 7-1 decision at 152 pounds.

Following a double forfeit at 195 pounds, Colton Krell won by fall at 220 pounds and Dylan Nirk won by forfeit at 285 pounds.

While the Razorbacks won at their lower and higher weights, they only won three points between 126 pounds and 195 pounds.

Against Tri-City United (TCU), Zweiner lost by fall, but Lembke once again won by fall to tie the match 6-6.

Keegan Bronson broke the tie by winning via a 10-7 decision at 126 pounds.

However, TCU won three of the next four matches to take a 24-14 lead.

At 160 pounds, Tyler Archer won by major decision 10-1.

Later, Krell won by technical fall 19-3 and Nirk won by fall, but after losses at 170 and 182 pounds it was too little, too late and the Razorbacks lost by five points.

Head Coach Shane Masching said Maple River and Tri-City United were both worthy opponents.

“Those two teams were very well coached,” he said.

However, he thinks the Razorbacks could have done more to beat them.

“We are doing a good job riding our opponent, but we could have scored a few more takedowns to win some of the close matches,” he said. “We need a couple more of our close matches to go our way.”

Against SC-ML, Lembke, Keegan Bronson, Cade Christianson, and Ty Bronson all won by forfeit.

Archer and Dylan Ehmke both won by fall at 170 and 182 pounds, respectively.

Lastly, Krell and Nirk both won by forfeit to close out the win.

When SC-ML had wrestlers to compete against Westfield, Masching said his team, “Did a great job getting our pins where we needed them.”

The Razorbacks will try to keep that momentum going when they take on United South Central in a home dual, at Blooming Prairie High School, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16.

Then, just two days after that, Westfield hosts a varsity invitational at Hayfield High School starting at 8 a.m.
