Straight River Days to celebrate 50th anniversary
After canceling last year’s events due to COVID, the City of Medford will host this year’s Straight River Days on June 17-19. This year will mark the 50th anniversary of the weekend-long celebration.
“It’s the 50th anniversary this year and we’re really excited to get to do it,” said Tonya Miller, who helps plan the event each year as vice president of the Medford civic club. “It’s fun, but it is also a lot of work. Each year we try to come up with new ideas and new events.”
While each year introduces fun new activities, certain staples remain year-in and year-out. The opening ceremony will kick off this year’s events; there will also be the annual medallion hunt, city-wide garage sales, parade, the car show, and the Party in the Park on Friday, June 18.
Some of this year’s new events include barrel rides for kids, a maker’s market, Bloody Mary bar and beer garden held in the large pavilion, and escape room competition for teams of up to six people. With so many fun activities, Miller said she and the other board members had their hands full with planning this year’s celebration.
“We had lots of meetings. We got together and starting planning,” Miller said. “Everybody has their own set events they do each year, but we always try to brainstorm and come up with new ideas.”
A native of Medford, Miller and civic club president Erin Sammon helped revitalize the celebration eight years ago. “I remember going when I was younger, and I was talking to Erin at a garage sale and we thought that it would be nice to bring back Straight River Days,” Miller said.
“We wanted to bring back Straight River Days for our kids the way we remembered it when we were kids,” Miller said. “It’s nice for everyone to get out and meet their neighbors. It’s a great hometown celebration.”
“I think everyone is eager to get out and see all of their neighbors and friends,” said Miller. “The civic club is very excited to get out and celebrate. I’m excited to see everyone’s smiling faces this year after the year we’ve had!”
The celebration owes a lot of its success each year to the sponsors. “I am very thankful for all our new and exciting sponsors. With their support, we are looking forward to having one of the best years yet celebrating our 50th Straight River Days,” civic club President Erin Sammon said. “I hope to see everyone there.”
