Arrests made in apparent attempted ATM heist

In an apparent attempted ATM heist in Medford, the Steele County Sheriff’s office has arrested two people.

Deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in Medford around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they found two vehicles in the area of the First State Bank on First Street NE. Sheriff Lon Thiele said a pickup was attempting to steal the bank’s ATM machine.

The vehicles left the area when the first deputy arrived. However, both vehicles were later found and two people were arrested.

Thiele said there is no known threat to the public regarding this incident. He also said the incident remains under investigation.

On Monday, the Steele County Attorney’s Office charged Marcus Shamane McLemore, 41, of Houston, Texas with a misdemeanor count of fleeing police on foot.

In the complaint, the only mention of bank incident indicated “the truck was now backed up to the ATM at the bank.” When officers pursued the truck by activating emergency lights and sirens, an occupant wearing dark clothing exited the right front door and fled southbound on foot. Another occupant wearing dark clothing exited the left front door and fled northbound on foot.

After pursuing the suspects on foot, the deputy returned to his squad to find the truck had moved. The complaint stated the deputy believed the suspect had possibly come back to the truck and fled again.

McLemore was arrested later on Saturday.

It’s unclear if there are other charges coming.
