Blooming Prairie celebrates reading

“Class, we have someone here to see how Things learn,” the Cat in the Hat said to her students.
Things 1-18 nodded, then continued their lesson in Amy Ostrander’s kindergarten classroom.
It was Book Character Day at Blooming Prairie Elementary School, and from students to teachers to the principal, it was a success.
They stayed in character, too:
“These owls are from ‘The Owl Diaries,’ and they’re all in Ms. Johnson’s class,” said Becky Johnson, a third-grade teacher.
The owls quickly corrected her.
“I mean, Amelia Bedelia’s class,” Johnson said. She wore Amelia’s more modern look of a denim jumper and brightly decorated leggings.
“The teachers really did it up,” she said, pointing out Haley Hasleiet’s Viola Swamp – from “Miss Nelson is Missing” – and Alli Schmidt, a third-grade teacher who dressed as “The Rainbow Fish.”
The kindergarten and Bridges classrooms were all “Things” from Dr. Seuss’s “The Cat in the Hat” book.
February has long been recognized as “I Love to Read” month, created to inspire and excite children about reading.
Diane Pfieffer’s second-grade classroom won the door decorating contest, creating a design using books from the nonfiction genre. Because the students are working on animal reports, they each wrote three facts and illustrated the “cover” by drawing a picture of the animal they chose.
