BREAKING NEWS: Riess murder referred to Minnesota Attorney General

Dodge County Sheriff Scott Rose says the David Riess homicide case has now been referred to the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office for review.
Rose said his investigators had been at a stand-still on the case waiting for the alleged murder weapon to be released by Florida authorities for forensics testing in Minnesota. The weapon was recovered in Lois Riess’ hotel room following her arrest in Texas.
In October, the sheriff’s office was advised by Florida officials that they were ready to release the hand gun for the Minnesota case. On Oct. 17, a Dodge County investigator flew to Florida and took possession of the gun. The hand gun was brought back to Minnesota and turned over to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in St. Paul for forensic testing on Oct. 22. 
On Jan. 29, the BCA completed its testing and released the gun back to Dodge County. The forensics report indicated the shell casings found at the Riess homicide outside of Blooming Prairie in March 2018 matched the gun being tested.
The Dodge County Attorney’s Office then advised the sheriff’s office that the Minnesota State Attorney General’s Office had offered to review the case for prosecution, Rose said. 
Sheriff’s investigators submitted their complete report to the Attorney General’s Office on Feb. 13. The Attorney General will need to review the BCA’s case and reports once they are submitted for charging considerations, according to Rose.
“We’ve had our case ready since shortly after Lois was arrested,” Rose said. “However, it was important to the integrity of the case to have the forensics completed on the alleged murder weapon before formally charging Riess.”
Sheriff Rose added, “Once she was charged out in Florida, and we knew she wasn’t going to be released down there, it allowed us the opportunity to take the time needed to prepare our case and wait for forensics to ensure we have the strongest case possible.”
David Riess was found shot to death in his rural Blooming Prairie home last March. His wife, Lois, has been considered the prime suspect since the start. She fled to Florida and is accused of murdering another woman in Fort Myers Beach. She is being held in jail in Lee County Florida.
