The city of Ellendale has begun preparations to build an inclusive playground at Ellendale Elementary School that will be accessible to all children.
Easy-to-use structures and games will make the playground enjoyable for everyone – including children with different physical and cognitive abilities.
According to NRHEG physical education teacher Wendy Schultz, the initial fundraisers for the playground were the kids themselves.
“We had a ‘Coins for Change’ drive at our elementary school. The kids brought in coins or bills. That raised about $5,000,” said Schultz.
Outside of the kids’ fundraiser, the elementary school received donations from Finley’s Wings at Work ($5,000), Ellendale Day Parade ($1,100), Farm and City Days Parade ($900), and many local families and businesses, along with grant funding.
The Ellendale Community Action Group will also partner with the school to help make the dream come to life.
According to Schultz, the town has raised $39,000 toward its $200,000 goal.
Those interested in assisting via donations can do so by mail to Ellendale Elementary School, 600 School Street, or the Ellendale Community Action Group at PO Box 218, Ellendale, Minnesota 56026.
