BP fourth-grader serves Principal for the day

Last Tuesday, Blooming Prairie fourth-grader Coen Abel got the opportunity of a lifetime when he got to serve as Principal for the Day at Blooming Prairie Elementary School.Principal Jacob Schwarz said some of the perks that Abel got to do as principal for the day included making morning announcements, greeting each class in the morning, giving a presentation on how to make maple syrup, receiving his own lanyard with his name and position and having an advising lunch meeting with some of his classmates and Principal Schwarz.
Blooming Prairie Education Foundation President Karen Fouarge said being principal for the day is a fun opportunity for the student and it gives Schwarz a chance to hear a student’s perspective on how the school is run.
“Whoever wins it, it makes the kid feel special and they get to give the principal some advice about what they feel could make the school run better,” she said. “I think the principal has fun listening to the students.”
Abel said he wishes there was more history being taught, more recess and that they didn’t have to wear masks any longer.
In addition to having a pizza lunch, which was supplied by the Education Foundation, with his classmates and the principal, Fouarge said she is sure Abel enjoyed not having to sit in the classroom most of the day.
The opportunity to be principal for the day was an auction item at last summer’s Blooming Prairie Education Foundation auction and was donated by Blooming Prairie Elementary School.
The chance to have your elementary son or daughter serves as co-principal for the day will again be one of the auction items in this year’s Blooming Prairie Education Foundation, which is scheduled for Saturday, May 22.
The silent auction begins at 1 p.m. and goes to 3 p.m. while the live auction starts at 4 p.m. and goes to 11 p.m. As of last Monday, she said there were tickets still available at the Cue Company. Even though the Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted, she said the Education Foundation is still requesting that the golden tickets be purchased to get into the live auction.
