An Owatonna man is in custody after he allegedly fired several shots while inside an apartment building, eventually forcing a stand-off early Wednesday morning.

According to Owatonna Police Capt. Josh Sorensen, officers responded to the complex on 22nd Street Northwest about 1:40 a.m. for a report of gunshots.

The local SWAT team was summoned within the first half hour of the patrol response, he said.

“The information they were getting – it turned into, ‘this is a SWAT situation,’ because they have more resources,” Sorensen said. “We needed more manpower to keep the scene safe.”

The occupants of other apartments in the building were evacuated as a precaution; they remained outside across the road for the duration of the event.

“They were pretty understanding,” Sorensen said. “They were outside for a while.”

There were no injuries reported.

The 23-year-old may face counts of reckless discharge of a firearm and other charges when he is officially charged Thursday morning.

In addition to the SWAT team, members of the Steele County Sheriff’s Office, Owatonna Fire Department and Mayo Ambulance all assisted at the scene.

The investigation continues by police.
