BREAKING NEWS: Some workers temporarily furloughed at Owatonna manufacturer

The Steele County Times has confirmed Rise Modular of Owatonna has reduced its work force—at least temporarily. 

In a statement from Rise, company officials revealed the company has instituted a “partial, temporary furlough.” Officials went on to say, “The decision comes in direct response to the company’s recent loss of its next scheduled project and has unfortunately resulted in an unforeseen reduction in its immediate workload.” 

It’s unknown the exact duration of the furlough or how many employees have been impacted. However, Rise said it is “fully committed to its business and the Owatonna community and is working diligently to restore regular operations as soon as possible.” 

Owatonna Area Chamber President Brad Meier called the announcement from Rise “an unfortunate situation.” He said, “We’re excited they are here and plan to continue to be here. It’s unfortunate some have to be furloughed.” 

Meier’s assessment is this will be short term. 

He said this setback will not impact the modular hotel project Rise has committed to in Owatonna. A modular hotel is set to be constructed and placed yet this month or early next month on land east of the Cinema 10 Movie Theatre on Allan Avenue, according to Meier. 

Rise began production in Owatonna in the spring of 2020. The company’s CEO is Christian Lawrence. There were 150 employees prior to the furlough, Meier said. 

“They are a new business, and it has had a lot of success,” Meier said. “We look for them to be strong in the future.” 

Rise is a full-service modular manufacturing and construction company located on Lemond Road.
