For the past few years, people have looked forward to Steele County Free Fair food reviews by Daniel Schley almost as much as they look forward to sampling the food themselves.
This year, the Steele County Times is partnering with Schley to bring you bonus reviews in addition to those he does for the SCFF team daily.
Each day, we will post Daniel’s second review of the day on our website, steelecountytimes.com, as well as on our Facebook page. We’ll include photos of the item – and of Schley – taken by sports editor and award-winning photographer Johnnie Phillips.
The reviews will be up by the time folks head out for dinner at the fair; if you’ve already had your pronto pup, save the suggestion for lunch the next day.
Faye’s Funnel Cake
I decided to try “Faye’s funnel cake” at her stand near the north entrance of the fair – and I can see why this is such a popular item. It's just the way I liked funnel cake: a little crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The batter itself has a uniqueness to it, almost as if there is a little vanilla added to it; it’s smothered in whipped cream and topped with powdered sugar. I decided to add fresh strawberries, but there are many toppings to choose from. I usually see long lines at this stand and now I know why.
Rating: I give this an 8.4 out of 10.
Cost: $8 for a plain cake, $11 with special toppings.
