Former area woman killed by branch in ATV crash

A freak ATV crash has claimed the life of a former Steele County woman.
Sabrina Skala, formerly Herschberger, 37, of Meadowlands, Minn., died in the Oct. 7 crash in St. Louis County. She grew up in Bixby area.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to an ATV accident on a trail south of Hibbing around 7:45 p.m. Skala was reportedly riding as a passenger in a side-by-side ATV when she was struck in the chest with a tree branch. She was taken to a hospital in Hibbing where she was pronounced dead.
No alcohol or excessive speed played a role in the crash, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Skala is survived by her husband and two sons.
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up to assist the family. “Sabrina was the rock of the family,” said Crystal Vilen in organizer the campaign. “She was very genuine, caring and real person. She will be missed by many.”
