JUST PLAIN OL’ SAUCEY
Blooming Prairie’s Ribfest rebounded with a fervor on July 29 as plenty of barbecued ribs available to all.
The 12th annual event, sponsored by the Blooming Prairie Youth Club, was held at the Blooming Prairie Servicemen’s Club. Sponsor was the Blooming Prairie Youth Club. Co-chairs Amanda Johnson and Josie Christy reported a record $42,000 was raised.
Amanda Johnson is coordinator of Ribfest while Josie Christy is interim director of the club.
“We thank the surrounding communities who are helping further the care and education of our communities,” said Johnson.
Last year’s event was somewhat marred when participants in the barbecue contestants ran out of ribs. Hormel donated 15 cases of ribs and private donations accounted for 30 more cases.
The Ribfest featured 15 contestants. Cooking went all day with judging taking place as the public inhaled the tasty ribs. Officials estimated attendance at the Rib Fest at 400 people.
Cookers took their involvement seriously and campaigned for their ribs. Obsession of Owatonna Lisa Dahlin and Martin Dahlin of Owatonna won the Best Ribs title. Team members were Lisa Dahlen, Martin Dahlin, Gerett Dahlin and Brianne Hinchley.
Dean and Jack Williamson of D & J Smokers were second best. Matt Wacek, Jason Grant and Shawn Vedder of Pig Wrangler of BP BBQ were third.
The People’s Choice award went to Matt Wacek and Jason Grant.
Winners of the Mystery Meals were Joe and Shawn Sundine. Liver was the meat of choice.
More than 140 items were auctioned off early in the event and toward the end. Music was provided by The Chub band of St. Paul.
Luke Ebeling won the kids hamburger contest. He created a burger with Ranch flavoring, black olives, lettuce and tomatoes.
The Chub band of St. Paul provided music. More than 140 items were auctioned off early and toward the end of the four-hour event. For the first time this year, organizers also auctioned off one rack of ribs from each competitor.
All proceeds benefit the Youth Club, which provides a fun, safe space and activities for school-aged kids after school, on school vacation days, and during the summer.
Next year’s Ribfest, the 13th annual, will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2024.
