The play’s the thing in BP

When the curtain goes up Nov. 7 on another musical at Blooming Prairie High School, it will be the 18th straight production directed by collaborators Tammy Johnson and Kari Bottin. It will also set another outstanding mark.
“This fourth production of ‘The Sound of Music” marks the 50th year of BPHS musicals,” remarked Johnson, “and it is something of which we are truly proud.“ The Sound of Music has proven to be the most loved of all the productions that the local high school has presented, and this year offers more outstanding singing and acting by BPHS students.
Jacob McHenry and Courtney Espe have been tapped as the leads in this presentation, and they are already receiving plaudits for their singing ability.  “McHenry has been involved in the musicals since eighth grade,” commented Johnson, “and Courtney just has a beautiful voice.”  Melanie Winzenburg and Riauna Bishop play the roles of the Mother Superior and Elsa, and they are backed by a cast of energetic and capable actors, Johnson added.
Tryouts were held in August and already rehearsals are ongoing.  “For example, last night we spent a long time on “So Long, Farewell,’” continued Johnson, “and students are catching on fast. We also have started practicing the laendier Austrian dance for the ball scene.”
Because it is 50th year production, an alumni committee has been formed, and an alumni reception is in the works. Blooming Prairie has long had a tradition of high quality musical productions, and this year should certainly be no exception.
