Services set for 11-year-old killed in crash

Funeral services have been set for the 11-year-old boy who died last week after the ATV he had been riding was found on top of him, pinning him underwater.
Shay Buer’s funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hayfield. Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hayfield Public School and from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
According to his obituary, “Shay was an outgoing child that had a strong faith and loved sports. He spent his summers playing baseball with the Hayfield youth baseball team, and his winters playing hockey with the Dodge County Wildcats. Shay enjoyed attending church and was always excited to help and be an altar server every chance he could get. Everyone knew Shay for his infectious smiles, his loving hugs, his ability to chitchat, and his hockey hair.”
Buer was found about 4:30 p.m. Aug. 4 in the 33000 block of 550th Avenue, just south of Dodge Mower Road. The caller told dispatchers they didn’t know how long he had been in the water, and CPR was in progress.
Members of the Mower County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol, Brownsdale Police, the Blooming Prairie Fire Department, Blooming Prairie Ambulance and Mayo One responded to the scene, where they continued life-saving efforts.
Buer was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mower County Sheriff Steve Sandvik said the accident involved “no criminal activity, and was an utter tragedy for the family.”
Sandvik was one of the many responders to the accident, aiding in the rescue efforts for nearly an hour.
Sandvik said his focus is making sure there are resources available for Buer’s relatives, his friends at Hayfield Elementary School, where Shay would have been a sixth-grader, and for the emergency personnel who responded to the incident.
