Steele teen earns state 4-H scholarship

It was kind of a trifecta for a
Steele County 4-Her at this year’s
4-H Livestock Auction during the
Minnesota State Fair.
Not only was Lauren Arthur of Owatonna chosen to present Minnesota’s governor with a 4-H t-shirt, she also earned a $1,000 scholarship at the auction on Aug. 24. She capped it all off by
selling a purple ribbon animal in the auction. She was fifth overall with a market lamb.
Arthur was one of 23 scholar- ships of $1,000 given out prior to this year’s auction. There were also several $4,000 and $2,000 scholarships presented to 4-Hers from around the state.
The scholarship money, Arthur said, will be used for her college education. She is attend- ing the University of Minnesota
in the Twin Cities where she is
majoring in sustainable systems management. She hopes to go into engineering and business focused on agriculture.
“I’ve known for a long time that I wanted to go into agricul- ture,” Arthur said. “I realize the direction that agriculture needs to feed the world, and I want to be a part of that.”
Arthur said she filled out an application for the scholarship.
In the application, she shared her
4-H experiences and what live- stock has taught her throughout her 4-H career.
While in 4-H, Arthur has shown both market lambs and steers. She said she is torn be- tween which one is her favorite. She found the steers more enjoy- able to work with prior to show, but the lambs more fun to show.
Other area 4-Hers awarded scholarships were Colton Ivers of
Blooming Prairie (Mower Coun-
ty), Carissa Kleinwort of Dodge County and Martha Moenning, Brittany Erickson, Faith Syales, Brock Erickson and Maia Irvin, all of Mower County.
